Nature Drawing—Artist Statement

Drawing is a medium that allows me to fully immerse myself in the intricate patterns and reflections found in leaves, vines, and the dappled light that graces various surfaces. The materials I choose to work with, vine charcoal and paper, are both derived from plants, creating a connection to the natural world that is reflected in my art.

My fascination with reflections centers around my desire to capture both the actual object and its distorted counterpart, seeing and recording both the "real world" and the "reflected world" as a metaphor for realism and illusionism in drawing. While my works are primarily naturalistic in style, as the series progresses, I find myself increasingly drawn to the surface of the drawing paper and the way it interacts with charcoal and different mark-making techniques.

As I continue to explore the natural imagery and my drawing process, I am discovering that the way I approach the "real world" is distinct from the way I approach the "reflected world." This has piqued my interest in experimenting with more overt differences in language and mark-making between these two worlds, in search of new possibilities for expression and representation.
